Tools Getting Stuck in Spindle after Long Uninterrupted Cuts

After a long or heavy cutting operation, a tool may become overheated and difficult to remove from the spindle.

If the cutting operation generates significant vibration, fretting corrosion effect can cause rust to gather on the tapered bores between spindle and tool.

Apply a coating of powder lubricant, such as aerosol molybdenum (Molykote 321 or similar), to the taper section of the tool shank and spindle to ease removal. Care should be taken while handling the tool if it is hot. [From Hartwig, Sylva Wilson]

Preventing Hydraulic Oil Contamination on Your Lathe

On the back of the actuator, there is a coolant return. This can sometimes get clogged with chips or other debris. When this occurs, coolant can spill over into the hydraulic return thus contaminating the hydraulic system. By simply checking the coolant return daily, this can be avoided. . Turret indexing problem on LB-15 OSP 5000 & 5020 Controls

The turret will not index and will not generate an alarm when in manual mode. It is possible that the gear that mounts on the blue hydraulic motor that controls turret indexing is broken. This motor is located inside the turret on the back right side. For reference in the parts book - Publication No. KLE15-367-R1 Sheet # 43 Index Unit (3). The motor is item 22 and the gear is item 16.

To verify that the gear is your problem check the following:

  1. Make sure machine is not in machine lock.
  2. Check the hydraulic pressure. It should be around 425 PSI.
  3. Does the turret unclamp? Turret will push forward and will not index.
  4. Does the turret clamp confirmation from the switch go off? Go to Check Data under EC Input 01. No. 1 bit 7 labeled TCLA.
  5. When pushing the turret index, can you hear the blue hydraulic motor turning? If so, the problem will be with the gear.  [From Hartwig, Sylva Wilson]
